As the RG reviewer was convinced, the application is already available for download on Apple devices, it is proposed to authorize in it using an Instagram account (banned in the Russian Federation, owned by the Meta corporation, recognized as extremist in Russia).
The interface is simple and clear, much like Twitter. In Russia, Threads only works via VPN, but unlike Tinder, the app is available on the AppStore with a Russian Apple ID and there is also a Russian localization.
Threads has stated that it will not be released in the EU due to regulatory issues. There were no statements regarding Russia, but judging by the peculiarities of the launch, the company’s position is that we do not work in Russia.
As Roskomnadzor told RG, “the condition for the operation of any social network on the territory of the Russian Federation is strict compliance with the requirements of Russian legislation.”
Therefore, according to the law, Internet sites visited by Russian users must promptly remove socially dangerous content and counter the spread of destructive materials. For user complaints about the placement of such content, social networks must have a feedback form.
At the same time, before, when it came to launching channels on the WhatsApp messenger, also owned by Meta*, which turns WhatsApp into a distributor of information, the department’s interlocutors pointed out that there can be no talk of blocking only if they belong to the parent organization. Specific violations must be logged on a particular site.
But as for the advertising on Threads and the advertising inventory, when it appears there, here the interlocutor of “RG” in the advertising market is unequivocal: the Meta is recognized as an extremist, advertising is equated with financing, therefore it is prohibited and criminally prosecuted.
*Meta and its Facebook and Instagram are recognized as extremists in Russia and banned.
