The absence of deficiencies in memory and attention is the key to the well-being of young people. Therefore, inattention, distraction, and problems remembering information can have a negative impact on young people’s quality of life. We will talk about disorders of memory and attention at an early age with the professor of the Department of Neurology of the Federal Faculty of Postgraduate Education of the Russian National Research Medical University named after him. NI Pirogov, Honored Doctor of Russia Anatoly Fedin.

– Anatoly Ivanovich, tell me when the situation repeats itself: you come, for example, to the kitchen and do not remember why you came. Or you open the messenger and you don’t remember why. Is this normal or is it a reason to sound the alarm?

– Forgetfulness when performing routine daily tasks is a phenomenon that many people face, even at a young age. In addition to possible memory problems, these moments can be due to stress, fatigue, or even simply being distracted by something else that is actively occupying our attention. It is worth noting that temporary memory problems may be associated not only with mental fatigue, but also with environmental factors such as noise or multiple distractions. It is important to remember that the brain constantly processes a large amount of information and sometimes some small details can be temporarily lost. However, if these cases become systematic and begin to interfere with normal functioning, this is a signal to contact a specialist to conduct a deeper evaluation of the situation and, possibly, receive recommendations to improve memory and cognitive skills. .

– Is it true that prolonged use of gadgets harms memory and concentration?

– Research shows that spending too much time in front of screens can have a negative impact on memory and ability to concentrate. This effect is especially noticeable in people who perform several actions simultaneously, whose brain simultaneously processes several streams of information. Constantly switching attention between applications, such as reading messages and listening to music, can lead to dissonance and brain fatigue, making it difficult to remember and process information. Additionally, experts recommend taking regular breaks while working or playing on devices to give your eyes and brain a chance to rest. But this rest is conditional, when information does not come from the outside, our brain participates in active analytical activity, processes incoming information, builds new plans and programs and thinking is formed.

– Of course, there are rules and recommendations about the time spent on the phone, etc. But what to do, because gadgets are now not just a way to make money, in principle, your whole life is spent on them…

– In fact, gadgets have become an integral part of everyday life and serve not only as a means of communication, but also as a platform for work, learning and entertainment. However, it is important to realize that moderation in the use of technology is a key aspect of taking care of your physical and mental health. Regulating screen time can help reduce negative effects such as lack of sleep, eye strain, and difficulty concentrating.

– Are there foods, vitamins, medications, etc. What doctors can recommend in case of decreased concentration and memory?

– To maintain brain health and improve cognitive function, doctors often recommend including foods rich in certain nutrients in your diet. For example, antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables help protect the brain from free radicals and reduce the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, walnuts, and flax seeds, are beneficial for brain and memory health. In addition, it is important to ingest enough B vitamins such as B6, B12 and folic acid, which contribute to the normal functioning of the nervous system. If these substances are lacking in the diet, the doctor may recommend taking special vitamin complexes or supplements. If memory and attention problems remain a concern, experts recommend vascular agents such as ginkgo leaf extract, metabolic agents such as glycine, nootropic drugs such as Prospecta, which help with inattention, decreased performance and memory problems in patients as young as. and older people.

– Is there a way to improve the attention and memory of young people without giving up their usual lifestyle? Or is this a myth?

– There are many ways to improve attention and memory (cognitive function) without having to make drastic lifestyle changes. Young people are encouraged to incorporate regular brain exercises into their daily routine, such as crosswords and puzzles, logical thinking games, as well as active reading, learning new skills and being creative. Active social communication has a beneficial effect. In addition, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet (see above – Ed.), regular exercise and sufficient sleep, which generally has a beneficial effect on improving attention and memory. Particularly important is constant physical activity, which increases cognitive potential.

– How else can you train your memory and attention?

– There are a large number of methods and exercises that help train memory and attention, a kind of cognitive fitness. It is important to understand that the brain, like muscles, needs regular exercise to maintain its functionality. Various exercises that practice memorizing new information are effective in training memory. It is also beneficial to spend time learning new skills or languages as it increases brain activity.

To train attention, you can teach classes with Schulte boards, a version of a puzzle game, three times a week and repeat the training courses periodically.
