There are about 3.6 thousand of them in the country. All of them are citizens of Russia and this week they will be ordered to leave the country within 90 days.

Exactly a year ago, the Latvian parliament adopted amendments to the migration law and thus obliged Russian citizens to obtain an A2 language proficiency certificate by September 1, 2023. Otherwise, their permanent residence documents.

On September 14, the Latvian parliament approved another amendment that affects only those who registered to take the exam before the beginning of September 2023. Passing the state language exam and obtaining the right to permanent residence were extended by two years in the Republic.

It is reported that the law exempts those over 75 years of age from taking the exam.
