Movistar launches its new 5G network with higher speed: in which areas is it available?

Date: July 27, 2024 Time: 08:29:58

Movistar continues with the development of its 3,500 megahertz (MHz) frequency band and activates 5G+. This product, which is already available in around 700 locations in Spain, aims to bring a “high performance” 5G service to its customers. The company wants to continue extending 5G+ coverage to reach a thousand municipalities by the end of 2023.

From Movistar they have announced that 5G+ will be available in both urban and rural areas, since use will continue to increase until coverage reaches almost the entire country. Once the service is available in a location, Movistar customers will be able to use the network without any additional charge.

The company has explained that 5G+ will allow users to navigate with ultra-fast speeds and low latency. These innovations will bring improvements in image quality, download speed and fewer interruptions in online games or ‘streaming’, among others.

The low band as a complement to 5G

In addition, it will result in a “quality increase” of the network even in crowded spaces, such as a sporting event or a concert. In that, he has indicated that 5G+ will allow speeds of up to 1,600 megabits per second (Mbps) and that its launch is carried out within the scope of the “wide use of Movistar in the 3,500 MHz band” by Ericsson and Nokia as suppliers. .

This use is completed with the coverage in the 700 MHz band that Movistar has been offering since last year and that currently reaches around 2,200 municipalities, “with numerous advantages such as improved indoor coverage.”

“The so-called low band is complemented in 5G with that of 3,500 MHz, ideal for services that require a user experience at very high transmission speed, both for rural areas and for large urban centers. In this way, Movistar already offers 5G coverage to more than 85% of the population”, he highlighted.

5G ‘Standalone’

On the other hand, Movistar covers a total of 11 cities in Spain with 5G SA (‘Standalone’). This ‘independent’ 5G is available in: Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Seville, Palma de Mallorca, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Ávila, Segovia, Castellón, Ferrol and Vigo.

“The goal by the end of the year is to have extensive 5G SA coverage in most cities with more than 250,000 inhabitants, as well as in smaller towns so that the capillarity of the Movistar service continues to be consolidated,” added the partner
