Unstable atmospheric conditions in southwestern Japan have forced authorities to introduce a fourth of five alert levels, meaning a recommendation to evacuate to a safe location, NHK television reported. The Japan Meteorological Agency said warm, humid air flowing toward the Sea of Japan front caused rain clouds to appear in Kyushu and other areas. The agency asked the population to remain alert in case of landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, river flooding, lightning and sudden gusts of wind.
In early August, Typhoon Hanun killed at least two people, injured more than 100 and left several hundred thousand people without power in the southern region of Okinawa. The storm forced Nagasaki, one of Kyushu’s main cities, to interrupt an annual ceremony commemorating the 1945 bombing.
