On Monday night the candidate tournament for the right to compete for the world title ended in Toronto. Going into the final round, 17-year-old Indian Dommaraju Gukesh was in the lead, 0.5 points ahead of Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi and the two American representatives, Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura.
In the last round, Gukesh played black against Hakamura, and Nepomniachtchi also played black against Caruana.
The Indian ended his game in a draw and Nepomniachtchi was on the verge of defeat, but he also ended the game in peace.
At the end of the tournament, Gukesh scored 9 points and took first place. This year he will play with the current world champion, the Chinese Ding Liren. Nepomniachtchi, Nakamura and Caruana scored 8.5 points each.
