“Pioneer” and Arthouse will show a documentary on Helmut Newton

Date: April 19, 2024 Time: 01:46:19

On July 27, a documentary directed by Gero von Boehm, Helmut Newton: The Disgusting and Magnificent, will be released in Russian cinemas. The tape is a dedication to the infamous icon of the 1970s, the German photographer Helmut Newton.

Almost every star of the era has been in his lens, from Claudia Schiffer to David Bowie. The film will be released jointly by the Pioneer film company and the Arthouse creative partnership. The audience premiere of the tape will take place on July 23 in Moscow at the Khudozhestvenny cinema.

Helmut Newton is a German photographer whose images of nude divas in the 1970s were called scandalous and fetishistic, and at the time of his death in 2004 they were elevated to classic status. In 2020, director Gero von Behm reflects on whether Newton empowered women or instead exploited their bodies without exposing the genius.

Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Twiggy, Elizabeth Taylor, and many other cult figures of the day revered Newton’s work and appeared in his lens. In the 80s, he switched to portrait photography, photographing Catherine Deneuve, Sting, Sophia Loren, Monica Bellucci, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, and his work with Cindy Crawford “Lady with a Doberman” is still considered one of the photographs most popular of our time. Helmut Newton is also the author of the famous portraits of Margaret Thatcher and Salvador Dalí.

The trailer for Luc Besson’s The Dogman has just been released. This is the filmmaker’s first project in four years. We talk about it in more detail here.
