The published article says that a Lahore resident called for medical help two days ago. He complained of high fever and headache. The initial diagnosis – influenza – as a result was not confirmed.
Laboratory analyzes revealed the presence of the brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri in the biomaterials.
This is the first case of this infection in Lahore. In another Pakistani city, Karachi, an amoeba was found in three local residents.
Doctors remember that Naegleria fowleri enters the human body through the nose. This usually happens when swimming. The amoeba is found in freshwater reservoirs: lakes and rivers.
