Qatar will expand the Campo Norte natural gas field (“North Field”, in English), the largest in the world, as announced by the country’s Government. With this new project, Qatar plans to achieve an increase of 16 million tons in the field’s annual production by 2030.
In addition to this latest news, Qatar had already expressed its intention to increase gas production in the Eastern Field from 77 million tons per year to 110 in 2026. The Qatari Government also plans an expansion that will increase production to 126 Millions of tons in 2027. The sum of these initiatives will mean an 85% growth in production capacity, the equivalent of about 65 tons.
Saad Al Kaab, Qatari Minister of Energy and CEO of QatarEnergy, the Qatari national energy company, has stated that the expansion will be called the “Northwest Field project”, and that this will be able to produce about 16 million tons per year. “gas” in the western section of the North Field.
“New horizons” for the Qatari gas industry
In that sense, in estimates announced at the press conference, it was noted that the “North Field contains immense additional quantities of gas that are estimated at about 240 trillion cubic feet,” which raises Qatar’s gas reserve to about ” 2000 trillion cubic feet.” These results “are of great importance” and have “positive dimensions that will take the Qatari gas industry to new horizons,” said al Kaabi.
On October 3, the emir of Qatar, Tamim Al Thani, announced the start of the expansion of the North Field, with which he hopes to increase production by 33 million tons per year in three years, which is part of the strategy of the country to strengthen its position as a global producer of liquefied natural gas.
The Campo Norte field, discovered in 1971, is the largest natural gas field in the world with a surface area that reaches 9,700 square kilometers, of which almost 6,000 square kilometers belong to Qatar and the rest to Iran. The field contains 50.97 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 7.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas condensate.
