Russia’s wealth will grow with sanctions. Well, or not all of Russia, but its richest citizens. This is how Mikhail Lomonosov would say his famous phrase, looking at the current rating of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index (BBI) billionaires.
List the 500 richest people in the world. Among them are 24 Russians, their total wealth is $289 billion. At the same time, despite sanctions and other financial disasters, in the first six months of 2023 his total wealth increased by $16.5 billion. It is important to understand that wealth, from Bloomberg’s point of view, is not the amount of money in the oligarchs’ bank accounts, but the value of the shares they own (or the proceeds of their sale).
So the commodity tycoons have gotten richer since the beginning of the year, which is predictable. Shares of many oil, gas and metals giants have risen sharply in price. And the co-owner of Lukoil, Vagit Alekperov, became the leader: in six months he became rich by $ 4.8 billion. Most likely, last year’s deal also hit its share value: Shell, which left Russia, sold its gas 400 stations to Lukoil.
Alekperov is followed by the main shareholder of the Novolipetsk metallurgical plant, Vladimir Lisin, and another Lukoil co-owner, Leonid Fedun, closes the top three, adding $1.73 billion to his fortune.
