The water could reach dangerous levels if an ice jam forms under the hydrological station, located 410 kilometers from Arkhangelsk. Pomorie hydrologists recalled that on the right tributary of the Northern Dvina, adverse natural phenomena develop when the water level reaches 650 centimeters. In this case, judging by the experience of previous years, the villages of Splavnoy, as well as Stepanovskaya, Navolotskaya and Burtsevskaya, may be flooded.
According to hydrologists, the risk is because the Northern Dvina is “not prepared” to disintegrate this year and the flow of ice is blocked, with water levels exceeding the norm by between 60 and 140 centimeters.
Meanwhile, flood control measures continue in Pomorie. As the authorities reported today, specialists from the region’s civil protection center are carrying out blasting operations at points of possible congestion in the Northern Dvina, near the village of Kopachevo, Kholmogory district. Explosions are also planned on the Pinega River, near the village of Nizhnyaya Palenga.
