Six-month-old Carolina has a terrible diagnosis: biliary atresia. This is a liver defect in which the baby’s bile ducts immediately after birth become inflamed and blocked, so the bile needed to digest fats entering the body cannot reach the intestines and accumulates in the liver, destroying its cells.
There are only two types of treatment for this defect: surgical reconstruction of the ducts and a liver transplant. Caroline’s reconstruction took place in the first half of March. Of course, everyone initially had high hopes for her. Caroline’s mother still remembers with horror how her little daughter was taken from her arms straight onto the operating table and how Caroline was taken to the ward on the second day. She had a central venous catheter installed, a drainage tube coming out of her stomach, a catheter in her back…
It was scary, but the worst thing was that the operation did not save the baby from developing cirrhosis of the liver… This means that Caroline had only one chance of salvation – a liver transplant, that is, one of the most difficult operations in the world. The cost of such an operation is 39,794,018 rubles – an unaffordable amount for Caroline’s parents! In search of help, Caroline’s parents turned to the Alyosha charity foundation, which opened a fundraiser.
