The union plans to go on strike on September 2, while members of the Aslef machinists’ union will go on strike on September 1, threatening days of work stoppages.
Rail passengers traveling to festivals or events over the weekend will face further work interruptions due to ongoing strikes over wages, jobs and working conditions.
The upcoming strike comes amid a lack of progress in talks with rail operators, who the union says are slow to act because the government refuses to give them a mandate to review the wage proposal.
More than 460,000 people responded to the unions’ call to join the protest on 31 August outside Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Downing Street residence.
