In August, the co-founder of Oracle, one of the largest software development companies, turned 80 years old… And it was his youthful appearance in the style of “minus 20 years” that became the main topic of discussion.
Ellison was born in 1944 in New York. When the boy was only nine months old, he fell ill with pneumonia. His father was a US Air Force pilot stationed overseas and did not take part in the care of his son. Larry’s mother gave him up to her relatives in Chicago: Aunt Lily and Uncle Lewis. The future billionaire did not meet his mother until he was 48.

In 1962, Ellison attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. However, his studies were interrupted by tragedy: his adoptive mother Lily, who showed great love for Larry, died, and the boy, falling into depression, dropped out of school during his second year. Ellison subsequently entered the University of Chicago for one semester, but dropped out without receiving a diploma. However, it was there that Ellison first became acquainted with programming, which determined his future path in the world of technology.
He began his career in the 1970s, working in a variety of technical positions, including database programming. In 1977, Ellison and two colleagues founded Software Development Laboratories (SDL), which later became Oracle Corporation. The company quickly gained market leadership in databases thanks to innovative solutions and became one of the key players in the technology industry.

In 2014, Ellison stepped down as Oracle’s CEO after nearly 38 years, but remained chairman of the board and served as chief technology officer. Forbes estimates the entrepreneur’s fortune at more than $130 billion, making him one of the richest people in the world.
In addition to his Oracle holdings, Larry acquired a 98% stake in the island of Lanai in Hawaii for about $300 million, where he is developing tourism and agriculture. Ellison has also invested heavily in real estate around the world, including several luxury properties in California, mansions in Malibu and estates in Rhode Island.
However, Ellison is curious not only about his business achievements, but also about his active lifestyle. He enjoys sailing, flying and tennis, and participates in sports competitions worldwide. The 80-year-old businessman is in excellent physical shape for his age. He is noted for his good skin condition and his cheerful, non-senile voice.
