Spain’s Grosso Napoletano has been named the best artisanal pizza chain in the world. The Madrid Italian restaurant is the first national company in the ’50 Top Pizza’ ranking, but it is not the only Spanish representative on this list. The NAP Neopolitan Authentic Pizza and Can Pizza chains are also present in the ranking of best pizzerias.
Grosso Napoletano thus reaches first place, rising two places in this edition of the ranking and becoming the first chain originating from outside Italy to achieve this recognition. The Spanish one has been above establishments such as the Neapolitan Da Michele, which has establishments in Spain, the United Kingdom and Japan and occupies second place. These two chains are followed by Big Mamma in third place, which is present in Spain with Villa Capri and Bel Mondo.
Hugo Rodríguez de Prada, co-founder of Grosso Napoletano, has indicated that “it is a real pride that the best experts in the sector recognize this way” the pizzeria’s product. The businessman has stressed that the chain wants to be able to “bring the ‘veracious Neapolitan pizza’ to the whole world, democratize it and give it its true place, recovering what industrial pizza has been taking away from us for years.”
Two more Spaniards in the ranking
For his part, the chain’s co-founder, Jorge Blas, has described what has been achieved as “incredible” and “a dream.” “This recognition continues to give us strength to fight to achieve each and every one of our objectives with the passion of a true Neapolitan. We are going to achieve what we set out to do!” he stressed, according to Europa Press.
A ranking of the 50 best artisanal pizzerias that includes two other Spanish pizzerias such as NAP Napolitan Authentic Pizza, which is ranked 23rd with locations in Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastián, Bilbao, Formentera and Frankfurt (Germany), while Just behind, at 24, is Can Pizza, which has pizzerias in Catalonia and Madrid and has risen five positions compared to last year.
Grosso Napoletano plans to reach 100 stores in 2026
In this way, Grosso Napolitano, with only seven years of existence, is positioned as the best Neapolitan artisanal pizzeria worldwide. The chain, which has 40 stores spread across Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Murcia, Valencia, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Vitoria, San Sebastián, Pamplona, Gijón, Santiago de Compostela, Vigo and A Coruña, plus a food truck ‘ ‘, plans to reach 100 stores in 2026.
The brand is working to close 2023 with 45 locations in Spain and has managed to go from selling hundreds of pizzas in its first location on Hermosilla Street in Madrid in 2017 to ending 2023 with more than two million pizzas sold. In previous editions of this ranking, Grosso Napoletano was recognized in 2022 with third place, in 2021 as ‘Best Spanish artisanal pizzeria chain’, in 2020 as ‘Best artisanal pizzeria chain in Spain and among the 10 best in Europe’ and in 2019 as ‘Best pizzeria in Spain’ and 21st in Europe.
