The Trophy system is designed to protect combat vehicles from anti-tank weapons. Using various sensors, the active defense complex determines the direction of fire and attempts to intercept an incoming grenade or missile with machine gun fire and special interceptors based on the “shock core” principle.
The contract amount is 25 million US dollars, although the number of systems purchased is not specified. If we are guided by the estimated price of a complex of 1.7 million dollars, which was announced during the purchase of the pilot batch of Trophy by the US Armed Forces in 2018, then we can say that we are talking about 14 tanks – this is just a set of companies.
The Challenger-3, which will enter service in 2027, is essentially a new turret jointly developed by Germany’s Rheinmetall and Britain’s BAE Systems, placed on a modified Challenger-2 chassis. The main advantage of the new tank will be a 120-mm smoothbore gun, identical to the one installed on the Leopard-2 tanks, starting with the “-A6” modification. This will allow the use of standard NATO ammunition, abandoning the rifled weapon of the same caliber. In total, 148 vehicles are planned to be converted.
