From June 16 to July 17, a new film program will take place at the Documentary Film Center and the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, “The Voice of Man.” It is dedicated to the work of Alexander Sokurov, his students, and the inspiration of the director, Andrei Tarkovsky. The focus will be on films at the intersection of fiction and documentary film.
The program includes seven works by Alexander Sokurov, filmed by the director between 1987 and 2000: “Stone” (1994), “Oriental Elegy” (1996), “Tenderly” (2000), “Mother and Son” (1997), ” Silent Pages” (1994), “The Second Circle” (1990), “Moscow Elegy” (1987). In addition to Sokurov’s own paintings, the cycle will include projections by students of his workshop: the melancholic painting “In Waves” (2022) by Sergei Kalvarsky, filmed in the spirit of Sokurov’s early elegies, the rebellious “The Cage Looks for a Bird” (2023) by Malika Musaeva and “Mom, I’m Home” (2021) Vladimir Bitokov.
The program will also be complemented by a documentary about Sokurov’s friend and creative inspiration, Andrei Tarkovsky (“Andrei Tarkovsky. Cinema as Prayer”). The film program will be completed with the screening of Kantemir Balagov’s debut feature, “Tightness” (2017), which participated in the Cannes Un Certain Regard competition and received the Fipressi Prize. The partner of the program was the non-profit Film Support Fund “Example of Intonation (Alexander Sokurov Foundation)”.
Let us remember that the first youth film festival “New Movement” ended in Veliky Novgorod. The closing ceremony was conducted by director and screenwriter Polina Lazareva, actresses Alexandra Revenko and Yulia Khlynina.
