Mikhail Nikolaev was born on November 13, 1937 in the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. He graduated from the Omsk State Veterinary Institute. He worked as a vet. He later switched to Komsomol work. From 1975 to 1979 he was Vice-President of the Council of Ministers of the YASSR, from 1979 to 1985-Minister of Agriculture of the Republic. Since 1985 – Secretary of the Yakut Regional Committee of the CPSU. In 1989 he was elected president of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the YASSR, since 1990 he became president of the Supreme Council of the republic. On December 20, 1991, he was elected president of Yakutia, receiving 76.7 percent of the vote. In 2002, he was appointed representative to the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the Yakutian government.
