According to the department, the defendant, who was brought into court while in the bathroom, attempted to escape custody using an unidentified explosive device. After that, he locked himself inside the convoy premises.
“There is information of two victims among law enforcement officers. The data is being finalized,” the report says.
The department clarified that steps are now being taken to detain the inmate.
According to media reports, the explosion was organized by Igor Gumenyuk, who also took two escorts hostage. Gumenyuk was accused of a terrorist attack at a rally near the Verkhovna Rada building in August 2015. Then one of the protesters threw a grenade at members of the National Guard – four people were killed, about 140 more were injured.
