According to the Mozambique Ministry of Defense, the dead man is Bonomade Machude Omar, also known as Ibn Omar. He has led the terrorist organization since 2017. Two accomplices were eliminated along with him.
The operation was carried out with the support of international forces. Among them are soldiers from Rwanda and some other African countries.
Two years ago, the US authorities recognized Omar as the leader of a terrorist cell. He is accused of numerous attacks, one of which is the massacre in the city of Palma, Cabo Delgado province, in 2021. Then some 35,000 people had to flee.
In total, according to UN estimates, more than a million people were forced to relocate due to jihadist attacks in Mozambique.
