On October 5 at 7:00 p.m. a grand gala concert dedicated to its 240th anniversary will be held on the new stage of the Mariinsky Theater. Stars from opera, ballet and the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra will take part in the festive evening. Valery Gergiev is on the director’s stand.
October 5 is a special date in Mariinsky’s life. It was on this day in 1783 that the Bolshoi (Stone) Theater was inaugurated on Carousel Square, from where the Mariinsky began its history. The new theater, built to the design of Antonio Rinaldi, was unequaled in scale; It impressed citizens and tourists with the scale and majesty of its architecture, and the technical capabilities of the stage seemed ahead of its time: the most modern equipment was used.
The Stone Theater became one of the most important centers of cultural life in the capital. Numerous world premieres have been held here. Among them are “A Life for the Tsar” and “Ruslan and Lyudmila” by Glinka, “The Force of Destiny” by Verdi, “The Pharaoh’s Daughter” by Pugni, “La Bayadère” by Minkus and many other famous titles by opera and ballet that are still in the theater’s repertoire.
