The Mariinsky Theater will present Puccini’s Triptych on the 105th anniversary of its world premiere

Date: July 27, 2024 Time: 09:57:01

On September 12, the long-awaited performance of Puccini’s Triptych will take place on the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theater. The one-act operas The Cloak, Sister Angelica and Gianni Schicchi will be performed on the eve of the 105th anniversary of the work’s world premiere and the 20th anniversary of the first complete production in Russia.

The main roles will be Tatiana Pavlovskaya, Nazhmiddin Mavlyanov, Alexei Markov, Nadezhda Serdyuk, Oksana Shilova, Ekaterina Krapivina, Anna Denisova, Pavel Yankovsky, Ekaterina Savinkova, Stanislav Leontiev, Anna Kiknadze and Mikhail Kolelishvili. For the first time, the philosophical “Triptych” of the Italian composer premiered on December 14, 1918 at the Metropolitan Opera (New York).

In the Soviet Union, only the first and third operas were staged: the performance of “Sister Angelica” was banned due to religious plot reasons. The Mariinsky became the first theater in Russia to stage the complete triad. In 2003, the performance was presented by an Italian team led by stage director Walter Le Moly.

Lately, Sister Angelica and Gianni Schicchi could be seen on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater Concert Hall in diptych format. However, due to numerous requests from the public and following the will of Puccini himself, on the anniversary date it was decided to show all parts of the famous Triptych on the historical stage of the theater.

Earlier it became known that the Radio House in St. Petersburg opens a new theatrical direction. This year, within the framework of the project, an extensive educational program is planned with lectures and screenings of iconic productions for everyone and workshops for representatives of the professional community.
