This year, more than 22,000 students from 250 educational institutions took part in the qualifying competitions. Based on the results of the regional competitions, the 50 best teams were selected for the final, i.e. more than 400 people aged 18-24. Each team consists of eight athletes: four boys and four girls.
As reported by the regional committee for physical culture and sports, the Volgograd Arena, the swimming pool of the Spartak-Volgograd water sports school and the site of the Volgograd State Academy of Physical Culture are used to pass the GTO standards. The competition will take place over five days.
– To get into the team, you had to go through a selection process. Initially, we were the best in the institute, then we went to the region. There, too, we were the strongest. And we were sent to Volgograd. There is a goal to show yourself here. I usually do cross-country skiing, but I hope to show myself at GTO standards,” said Ekaterina Kirilishina, a student at the Kuzbass Polytechnic, to RG.
In the individual competition, students will perform the following events: 100, 2000 and 3000 metre race, high bar pull-ups (boys) and flexion and extension of arms lying on the floor (girls), forward bending from a standing position on a gymnastic bench, lifting the torso from a supine position, a standing long jump with a two-foot push-off, shooting with an electronic weapon from a distance of ten metres and swimming a distance of 50 metres. In addition, there will be a team race in which the entire team of participants will take part.
– Student life is a time of self-discovery. A person learns a profession and starts a family. It is very important at this age to start the GTO complex. It is very important to set new goals, achieve results and take care of oneself. If during his student years a person meets the standards, then this is a good sports vaccination for life, says Maxim Urazov, director of the Department of Physical Culture and Mass Sports of the Ministry of Sports of Russia.
The team that comes first overall will receive the TRP Festival Challenge Cup. The absolute champions of the festival were athletes from the Belgorod State National Research University.
In addition to the competitive part, all contestants will enjoy a travelling exhibition at the State Sports Museum with an exhibition on the history of the GTO complex. It was placed in the square in front of sector “A” of the stadium. It will last until July 13.
The opening ceremony took place at Mamayev Kurgan. The closing ceremony will take place on July 2 at the Central Park of Culture and Leisure.
