The number of hotels for sale increases again and exceeds 1,300 ads.

The total number of hotels for sale in Spain grew by 27% in the month of August 2023 compared to the previous year’s data, as reported by the idealista real estate portal. From the platform they affirm that the establishments with a hotel license with published advertisements reach 1,300.

Specifically, at the end of August the portal had advertisements published for 1,346 properties of this type, 286 more than in August of the previous year. These types of sales have been on the rise since August 2021, when active hotel listings barely reached 420.

The supply of hotels for sale skyrocketed during the pandemic due to the imbalances it caused in the sector, and the number of properties offered has not stopped growing in the last two years despite the restrictions surrounding tourism having been relaxed.

Balearic Islands in the lead

At the end of August, coinciding with summer, and despite the good prospects for the tourism sector, all provinces had units for sale, except the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

The largest “stock” of available hotels is found in coastal areas, the main tourist centers of Spain. The Balearic Islands are at the top (111 units), followed by Málaga (106); Girona (100); Alicante (91 properties); Barcelona (87); Grenada (74); Las Palmas (55) and Valencia (51).

Another 10 provinces have at least twenty advertisements for hotel establishments for sale, including Asturias, Madrid, Cádiz, Tarragona, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, A Coruña and Castellón. On the other side of the table are Álava, which only has two units available, and La Rioja, Ourense and Vizcaya, with five hotels for sale in each case.

As a whole, more than a dozen capitals register an increase of at least 50% in the number of establishments with a hotel license for sale compared to last year, while nine have lost “stock.”
