It is known that in the polling stations where other candidates for the highest state office in Ecuador voted, security measures were also reinforced. However, they did not consider it necessary to acquire means of individual armor protection.
“To date, the election day is going well,” reported the electoral council of the republic on its page on the social network X (formerly Twitter – blocked in the Russian Federation). The agency also reported that in the first three hours after the start of the elections, 20 percent of citizens cast their vote.
Let us remember that on Sunday, August 20, the anticipated presidential and parliamentary elections began in Ecuador. Eight candidates are competing for the post of head of state. Meanwhile, polling stations are operating under a state of emergency declared by the current leader of the republic, Guillermo Lasso, in the midst of a deadly assassination attempt against candidate Fernando Villavicencio. The center-right was assassinated on the night of August 9 with three shots to the head after a campaign rally.
