Previously, leaders of German foundations in charge of memorial complexes at former Nazi concentration camps, including Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen, contacted the Russian diplomatic mission. The Germans asked the Russians to refrain from participating in traditional official events on the occasion of the upcoming anniversary of their liberation.
The embassy expressed regret and disappointment at this position.
“It completely ignores the historical context… contributes to the erosion of the post-war reconciliation process between Russians and Germans,” the diplomatic mission said in a statement.
They stressed that such appeals would not affect the plans of Russian foreign institutions in Germany in connection with Victory Day and promised to properly honor the memory of Soviet soldiers.
