Luis Rubiales is, since May 17, 2018, the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The position, which he could lose in the next few hours if the Federation’s General Assembly so decides this Friday, August 24, brings him an annual income that exceeds the salary of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. In addition to the gross salary, Rubiales receives a housing allowance and a remuneration from UEFA, for his position as vice president.
The RFEF pays its president, Luis Rubiales, a total of 675,761 euros gross per year plus housing assistance of 3,000 euros gross per month. The salary was approved by the General Assembly by majority on May 30, 2022 with 83 votes in favor. The amount multiplies by 7.5 the remuneration of the President of the Government, 90,010 euros gross per year.
Apart from the income that Rubiales generates for presiding over the RFEF, he receives a salary for his position as vice president of UEFA. In this case, the salary stipulated for his charge is 250,000 euros gross per year. Therefore, per year, Luis Rubiales earns close to a million euros: 928,761.
Pedro Sánchez’s salary as president.
The acting president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has a salary for his position that is far from that received by Luis Rubiales in the RFEF. According to public data, Sánchez earns a gross annual salary of 90,010.20 euros, which means a gross monthly salary of 7,500.85 euros. The amounts were adjusted at the beginning of 2023, when the Government (which then had a gross annual salary of 86,542 euros) agreed to raise the salary by 4%. In this way, they committed a new increase in his mandate, after the 2% agreed for 2022.
Since his arrival at Moncloa, in July 2018, Sánchez has increased his salary on several occasions. When he became president, his gross annual salary was 80,953 euros. A year later, in 2019, the amount rose to 82,978 euros. In 2020, coinciding with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Pedro Sánchez’s remuneration was 84,845 euros.
The increases did not stop and, in 2021, the remuneration of the socialist leader reached 85,608 euros. There were still two more increases for Sánchez to reach the current 90,010 euros. The figures reveal that, since his appointment as president, the salary has risen by nearly 10,000 euros.
Extraordinary General Assembly of the RFEF
Now, Luis Rubiales is in the spotlight and many are calling for his dismissal. According to various media outlets, the RFEF president fears losing his salary after what happened in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
