In the complex process of requesting and granting unemployment benefits in Spain, there is an aspect that commits the beneficiaries to fulfill a series of obligations that go beyond the simple economic benefit. Among these, active participation in social collaboration work or in employment programs stands out, designed to promote reintegration into the labor market and continuous training for the unemployed. It is important to note that this obligation not only applies to people who receive a contributory benefit, but also to those who are receiving unemployment benefits.
The State Public Employment Service (SEPE) has revealed that this fact is a serious infraction in the event that it is not complied with. Sanctions vary depending on the recurrence of non-compliance. In the first case, the defaulter may face the suspension of the benefit for a period of three months. If it were repeated again, the sanction would reach six. If non-compliance were commonplace, the unemployed person could face the definitive termination of the benefit.
The SEPE emphasizes that receiving an unemployment benefit entails a series of obligations that must be fulfilled and it is essential to be aware of the responsibilities that one has as a beneficiary thereof. Participating in social collaboration work is important, although the most important thing is to accept a ”proper placement”. That is to say, it is obligatory for the unemployed person to accept jobs that are related to the profession in demand, the trade that he used to carry out habitually, or any job that adjusts to his skills and training.
In addition, they clarify that if the unemployed person has been receiving a benefit for more than a year, the public employment services can consider “adequate placement” in any profession they believe. This is done with the aim of encouraging the unemployed to acquire a proactive attitude towards job opportunities that may arise. Rejecting this type of work entails the same sanctions mentioned above.
