Date: July 27, 2024 Time: 07:00:18

The United States announced this Thursday new sanctions against Iran after the attack on Israel during the early hours of last Saturday. The economic details detailed by US President Joe Biden are aimed at the unmanned aerial vehicle program, the steel industry and Iranian automobile companies.

Through statements from the US Treasury and State Departments, these sanctions are indicated as their response “to the unprecedented attack” by the Iranian Government. Specifically, from Washington they point to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and the Ministry of Defense and Logistics of the Armed Forces (MODAFL) as the two entities that are punished for this initiative.

Matthew Miller, spokesman for the State Department, assured that “the United States is taking radical measures against several actors involved in Iran’s unmanned aerial vehicle program” as well as supplier companies and several clients of one of the largest steel producers in the country and Iranian auto companies “with connections to the United States.”

New round of sanctions

In total, the Treasury Department imposes sanctions on 16 individuals and two entities that enable the production and testing of Iran’s unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the proliferation to actors working on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, its number of vehicles. production. unmanned aerial vehicles, Kimia Part Sivan Company (KIPAS), and other Iranian manufacturers of unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicle engines.

“Iran’s metals sector generates the equivalent of several billion dollars in annual revenue, with the majority coming from steel exports,” the Treasury Department said in its statement. Treasury also sanctions five companies that supply component materials for steel production to Iran’s Khuzestan Steel Company (KSC), a US-sanctioned entity, or that purchase finished steel products from KSC.

Additionally, the Treasury sanctioned the Iranian automaker Bahman Group and three of its subsidiaries, which have continued to materially support the IRGC and other sanctioned entities. Finally, the Commerce Department imposes new controls to restrict Iran’s access to technologies such as basic commercial-grade microelectronics.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced last Tuesday that the United States and its partners were coordinating a new round of sanctions against Iran for the attack on Israel, the first launched by Tehran directly against Israeli territory.

In coordination between Washington and London, the British Government announced another round of sanctions against three people and entities in Iran after the attack against Israel on April 13, mostly linked to the country’s defense sector and military departments. The sanctions imply a freeze of assets in British territory, which now applies to a total of 22 Iranian citizens or institutions.
