Spanish houses are already preparing for the suffocating heat of the peninsula, which has already begun in April and which threatens to continue to dominate the days during the coming months. With this comes the expense. That is why consumers are looking for no-cost options, such as natural ventilation, to cope with high temperatures. Other cheap models, such as the use of fans, are also not usually enough, so families, in the absence of alternatives, seem to be forced to turn on the air conditioning and inflate the electricity bill. However, there is a cheap and efficient option that is not common among families: thermal paint.
Thermal paint is a synthetic material made up of certain components with elastic characteristics and cork particles. This type of insulation reduces energy consumption and increases the efficiency of air conditioning systems, by breaking the so-called “thermal bridge”, which reduces the exchange of heat or cold from outside to inside and vice versa.
Research from Stanford University has demonstrated the efficiency of this system in improving the insulation of a building or house. The researchers applied two types of thermal paint to an exterior wall and an interior wall of two artificial apartments. An underpainting, composed of infrared-reflecting aluminum particles, was first applied, and a layer of inorganic paint with a wide range of colors was used on top.
The results showed that, by applying both layers on the interior wall of a house, the amount of heat that enters is reduced, while when using it on an exterior wall, the entry of cold is prevented. Thus, the study ensures that this type of paint was able to reduce the use of heating by around 36% and cooling by more than 20%, always in artificial environments.
Other benefits of thermal paint
Along with reducing the use of climate systems, thermal painting also has other benefits for homes. By functioning as a thermal bridge suppressor, this paint prevents humidity and prevents the appearance of mold on any material where it is applied. It also reduces outside noise thanks to its insulating nature, and allows you to paint over it without losing its properties. Finally, it comes from ecological materials, and is neither flammable nor burns, so it cannot cause a fire to start.
