With these summer months full of expenses and travel, it is normal for some retirees with very low pensions to look for a supplement to their pension. Most retirees have questions about how they can increase their income by supplementing their Social Security pension. A good alternative to increase the amount to be received from the pension would be the supplement to reduce the gender gap.
This supplement to the retirement pension is intended for women and men. You can request a supplementary payment of up to 121 euros. It is considered a complement to reduce the gender gap. The only requirement is to have spent years without contributing to Social Security for staying at home to take care of the children.
According to government data, specifically from the Ministry of Social Security, as of June 1, a total of 518,183 people have received the gender gap supplement, with an average import of 65.8 euros. It is important to note that more than 91.4% of the beneficiaries are women, although men also have the possibility of receiving it. This economic support is available to all those who receive a contributory retirement pension, as well as those who receive a pension for permanent disability or a widow’s pension, as long as the latter have been recognized as of February 4, 2021.
Requirements for mothers
Although both men and women who have been parents can be beneficiaries of this aid, only one of them can receive it: specifically, the one who receives the lower amount pension. However, it is important to highlight that mothers who are beneficiaries of a contributory pension from the Security of the Civil Registry.
Requirements for parents
In the case of parents, if the children were born before December 31, 1994, it is required to present the contribution gap certificate that demonstrates at least four months of contributions in the nine months prior to the birth or adoption, as well as in the next three years. For children born after January 1, 1995, it is required that the sum of the contribution bases in the two years after the birth or adoption be less than 15% less than the sum of the bases of the two previous years.
Like contributory pensions, this year there has been an 8.5% increase in the amounts. The minimum amount of this supplement to reduce the gender gap is 425.6 euros per year, which is equivalent to 30.4 euros per month for each child.
The Administration allows this supplement to be received for a maximum of four children, and the amounts are as follows: one child (30.4 euros per month), two children (60.8 euros per month), three children (91.2 euros per month) and four or more children (12 1.6 euros per month). Social Security emphasizes that this supplement will continue to be granted until the gap between men and women is reduced to 5%. In addition, if a person receives the maximum pension of 3,059 euros per month, the supplement will be used based on the number of children the pension beneficiary has.
