On Friday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the app had surpassed 70 million subscriptions, saying this milestone far exceeded his expectations. Threads surpassed the ChatGPT record, as the OpenAI chatbot had reached the 100 million mark in two months. One of the reasons for the rapid success of this app is its easy registration process using an Instagram account.
According to data from Sensor Tower, Threads is currently the most downloaded free app in the US on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. At first glance, Threads looks like a copy of Twitter where there are posts -photos, videos of up to 5 minutes and post texts of up to 500 characters- and you can interact with them in three ways: distinguishing “likes”, reposting them and commenting. Just like on Twitter, you can enable notifications to be alerted when a user posts, but you can’t create lists with users.
Neither hashtag or tags can be used, so there are no trending topics or trends. However, one of the advantages of Threads – which is still ad-free – is that there will be no limit to the number of posts users can see on Threads, one of the key differentiators between the two apps after last weekend’s This week Musk will announce (and later withdraw) limits on the reading of tweets to prevent “extreme levels of data extraction and manipulation of the system.”
Meta shares were up about 1% before the New York Stock Exchange opened today.
