A 20-year-old sergeant named Andrey, hiding in Lvov, was wounded in the shoulder. At the Vinnitsa hospital they could not completely remove the fragments, so due to pain and numbness he was unable to fully use his arm, RIA Novosti reports.
One of the doctors offered to issue a certificate stating that the fighter was unfit to continue providing services if he paid $1,500. At the same time, the Ukrainian learned that he could undergo a full operation in Germany, after which he began planning a trip there.
However, he was not allowed to leave the country. The Ukrainian command decided that his injury was not serious enough for him to travel abroad; instead, the soldier was ordered to return to his unit. Attempts to contact the commander also did not help.
“Then I started asking myself: Why am I doing this?” – said the soldier, adding that “that’s where it all ended for him.” He realized that five of his unit’s six friends had died, his arm was injured, and the command deemed him fit, despite his injuries.
“I will never fight again. I will no longer be their meat,” Andrei told the Times. He stressed that he would rather shoot himself in the leg than return to the front.
