“The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has officially announced his request to join the BRICS, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a request,” Rodríguez said in an interview with the state-owned Venezolana de Televisión.
Rodríguez indicated that his country is ready to “put the largest oil reserves in the world at the service of the BRICS Energy Commission” and will promote the development of “new cooperative relations” and “the construction of a multipolar world.”
Let’s remember that previously Bolivia sent a note to Russia about its intention to join the BRICS. As Ambassador María Luisa Ramos-Ursagaste pointed out, similar notes were sent to other members of the association: Brazil, India, China and South Africa.
Brazilian authorities have indicated that the country is not interested in expanding the BRICS, but will not block. “Brazil’s position was one of solidarity…At some point, Brazil will have to give in,” Brasilia said.
