What to see in theaters in 2023

Date: May 19, 2024 Time: 06:16:25

January has just started and we already have a plan to not miss all the most interesting things that happen on stage. Thus, we listen to songs in the renovated Shalom Theatre, we sing to the heroes of the Emir Kusturica film, we visit the actors of the RAMT and we see the ballet based on The Queen of Spades.

Where: Warsaw Highway 71, Building 1

What you can see right now:

January 20, 7:00 p.m. — “Exodus”

January 21, 19:00 – “Fat Lyuba”

January 22, 7:00 PM – “Monya Tsatskes – Standard Bearer”

In just one year, amazing metamorphoses occurred with Shalom. With the arrival of the new artistic director Oleg Lipovetsky, the repertoire was replenished with five new performances. Two of them – “Exodus”, staged by Pyotr Shereshevsky and co-produced with the 27 Theater Project “Fat Lyuba”, based on the book by Oleg Lipovetsky – were included in the long list of “Golden Mask”. The theater enters 2023 with great plans, whose main point is the return to the national stage. The building on Varshavskoye Shosse will open with the premiere of a musical concert: it will intertwine the stories of the Shalom actors, who worked together with the artists of the Solomon Mikhoels troupe, and the stories of the young participants of the theater. Not only Jewish songs will be played, but also Soviet music of the 1940s and 1980s. In the interweaving of the fate of people and the fate of the country, a new story is born, which the theater will tell.

One of the most anticipated projects of this season is the ballet The Queen of Spades with choreography by Yuri Posokhov. The premiere on the Historic stage is scheduled for June. Yury Krasavin is reworking Tchaikovsky’s immortal music for the premiere, and Polina Bakhtina will be the stage designer for the performance. With her, Possokhov premiered his version of The Nutcracker at the Musical Theater at the end of December. Fans of opera rarities await the opening of sales for the first screenings of “Askold’s Grave” at the Bolshoi Chamber Stage in March. The libretto for one of the first Russian operas by Alexei Verstovsky was based on the novel of the same name by Mikhail Zagoskin. The action takes place shortly after the Baptism of Rus’. It is interesting that for the first time “Askold’s Grave” was staged at the Bolshoi Theater – in 1835.

In the year of its centenary, the Moscow Municipal Theater is preparing a whole series of premieres, but one of the main ones, of course, will be Lermontov’s Masquerade. This is a special work for the theater – for many years on its stage this play was staged by the great Yuri Zavadsky, and Leonid Markov and Margarita Terekhova shone in the main roles. The current artistic director of the theater, Yevgeny Marchelli, decided to return Masquerade to the repertoire, building a bridge between the past and the future of the theater. And lead the whole company in the new production. It should be noted that it is not the first time that Marchelli himself refers to this work by Lermontov: in the early 1990s, he staged Masquerade at the Tilsit Theater in the Kaliningrad region.

Theater-goers are no strangers to performances that take place in the lobby, on the stairs, under the roof, and right in the courtyard. Last season, on the occasion of its anniversary, the Russian Youth Theater launched the One Hundred project, a play that takes a tour of the entire space of the mansion on Theater Square and the history of the theater. This year, the transformation awaits the Small Stage of the Theater – in a textual production of Marina Brusnikina, it will become a Moscow apartment. Actors of the older generation will share with their guests-viewers memories of everyday life, favorite things, houses. These stories will reflect both the history of the theater and the history of the country.
