The German national team has always been considered a bastion of stability in this changing world. And so Hans-Dieter Flick managed to become the first Bundesmannschaft mentor to be fired in a hundred years. A unique failure to highlight! In the history of the German national team, only two coaches have won less than half of their games: Erich Ribbeck and Flick. The first managed to travel with the national team to only one major tournament – the 2000 European Championship. There Germany failed: one point from a draw with Romania, a defeat from its main rival, England, and a defeat from Portugal. That team needed an upgrade, so the failure shouldn’t have been too surprising, although the failure was, of course, too humiliating.
Flick also lasted only two years, but he did not leave after the failure at the World Cup in Qatar, but continued to prepare the team for the local continental championship. It all came down to the fact that in the last four games the former leader had four defeats and a draw in five games, in the previous three only one goal was scored. The last straw was the defeat against Japan 1:4.

Flick’s failure is especially striking in the context of Joachim Löw’s 15 years of work with victories in the World Cup and the Confederations Cup. He was asked to refresh the team, which would appear rejuvenated for the big local tournament. Instead, the defense continues to limp, a new quality forward has not been found and Serge Gnabry has not become a leader who can lead the team. Flick relied mainly on old, proven fighters, which ran counter to the need for an infusion of fresh blood.
So the question arises: what did Flick manage to do? It seems like nothing at all. In reality, what were the federation leaders thinking when they appointed him? Hans-Dieter only had one big club in his career: Bayern. He achieved solid success with her, but came after Niko Kovac, so the mentor simply needed to establish the right microclimate in the team. But he did not do more serious work.

Now all these tasks will fall on the shoulders of the new coach. The sporting director of the national team, Rudi Völler, will temporarily manage the team. By the way, he fully coached the national team in 2000-2004. The main candidate to fill the vacant position is Julian Nagelsmann, who could also join the national team from the Munich superclub.

Will you complete the task in less than a year? Complex problem. Now it seems that the new coach will have to perform at least one minimal task: decide the clip and prepare it at home for Euro 2024 to avoid failure. It seems that now it will be doubly interesting to watch the Germans.
