The first stage of the Euro playoffs is all about it. The last two matches of the round of 16 were played on Tuesday, July 2nd. It turned out brilliantly!
In the first match, the Netherlands faced the sensational Romania. Nobody expected the Romanians to take first place in the group together with Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine. At the same time, both Belgium and Slovakia had already played their matches in the round of 16 and lost. The last representative of Group E in Germany did not stay long either. The Netherlands was stronger than the Romanians in everything, but after the first half, what happens: after the 80th minute they were only one goal ahead. But in the end, defeat, and a completely deserved defeat.
The second match of the day was expected to be a more evenly contested affair. There, Turkey played Austria. Ralf Rangnick’s team won over many fans in the group stage (they won their group, by the way), so Austria was considered a slight favourite. However, it all started with a goal from Turkey. And what a goal! In the first minute after a corner kick! Turkey made history by scoring the fastest goal in playoff history. The score did not change before half-time, but in the second half the heat began. First Turkey scored (again from a corner kick), then the Austrians pulled one back. Then there was constant pressure, several incredible moments, but the Turks held on to the winning score. And we made it to the quarter-finals.
With this we finally say goodbye to the round of 16 matches. And at the same time with the national teams of Denmark, Italy, Slovakia, Georgia, Belgium, Slovenia, Romania and Austria.
Who will play who in the Euro quarter-finals?
Only the lazy did not mention the fact that the grids turned out to be not completely uniform. But that’s not bad at all! On Friday, July 5, we will see two important matches, each of which is worthy of a final: Germany – Spain and Portugal – France.
