On August 26, in Wroclaw (Poland), Oleksandr Usik will have another defense of the world heavyweight titles. Initially, we all expected the fight between the Ukrainian and Tyson Fury, but the contract was never agreed. So British puncher Daniel Dubois got his chance.
For a 25-year-old boxer nicknamed Dynamite, this is a breakthrough, because, in fact, there were no big names on his way yet. However, he became a contender and we should get to know Dubois better.
Daniel was born into a large family, he has 11 siblings and, by the way, he is not the only one involved in boxing. He also box athlete Caroline’s 21-year-old sister and brothers Prince (18 years old) and Solomon (10 years old). Dubois first came to the gym at the age of six and quickly fell in love with the sport. In the fans, Dynamite gained power and for some time was the first number of the British team in the weight of him. However, Daniel refused to go to the Olympics: “I would very much like to compete in the Olympics and compete for gold. If the Olympics were next year. But I can’t wait four years. I know that in four years as a professional I will grow much more as a boxer than as an amateur. By 2020, I plan to become a world champion of professionals.
Such a bold plan could not be realized, but Dubois’s ingredients were definitely good. He came to the pros with an amateur record of 69-6, with most of his wins coming by knockout. There was another episode that made Daniel famous. He was in Anthony Joshua’s training camp when he was preparing for his first fight with Andy Ruiz. Then, in one of their sparring sessions, Dynamite unleashed his power on his star compatriot and knocked him down.
“Yes, definitely, there is some truth to this, I won’t deny it. I really trained with Joshua and caught him with some serious shots a couple of times,” Dubois modestly replied when asked if this story was true.
Later, already a professional, Daniel flew to Russia, where he helped Alexander Povetkin prepare for the fight with AJ.
Daniel’s professional career started brightly – he knocked down Marcus Kelly in 35 seconds. And overall, the Brit had 18 early wins out of 19. The only one Dubois has gone the full distance of the fight with is new Russian Kevin Vladimirovich Johnson. The rest of the fighters defeated by Dynamite went down either in the fifth round or even earlier. It is also interesting that on the way to the fight for the title, Dubois changed coaches several times. He started his career under the management of Martin Bowers, then there was Mark Tibbs and Shane McGuigan. Now the Brit is training with Don Charles, who is known for his work with Derek Chisora.

The only loss in his career was suffered by Dubois against his compatriot Joe Joyce. But here there is a small nuance. According to the referee’s notes, Daniel won, but due to a severe bruise, he was unable to continue the fight. It later turned out that he had a broken orbital bone and a damaged optic nerve. However, many doubt Dubois’ latest win over Kevin Lerena. In the first round, the South African boxer knocked down the young opponent three times, but the referee did not stop the fight. Daniel recovered and in the third round he sent Lerena to the canvas twice. A second before the gong, the referee stopped the fight, and this raised many questions. The promoter of Lerena even described the judge’s actions as biased and threatened to file an appeal.
At the dawn of his professional career, Dubois was being called the new Mike Tyson by some. The fighter himself is only happy with such analogies: “Tyson was the one I always admired. As a child, I tried to imitate him in terms of his actions in and out of the ring. I feel like this is part of my character and part of my style. When I was a kid, I used to watch videos of different fighters and then I would go to the gym and try to be a little bit Tyson.”

Of course, Dynamite will have opportunities in battle, it is not for nothing that he bears such a nickname. Dubois is famous for his knockout power. Yes, he is inferior to Usyk in pure boxing, but at the same time he is working on that aspect as well. Besides, Daniel has nothing to lose.
