Ignatov’s foul was really in someone else’s half of the field, when not far from the Zenit penalty area, he charged Wendel in the leg. Whether the punishment deserved the card is a question for the expert, former referee Igor Fedotov. Here is his assessment of the episode: “Karasev’s card was unexpected. It can be explained by taking down a player who was running away. It’s not that it’s bad, but I didn’t expect him to show it so soon. In general, he was not sure at the beginning of the first half, then in the middle … he really showed it early, in those games they don’t give those cards, they stretch it out as long as possible. But, of course, Ignatov grabbed the opponents with his hands after that, there is no need to tie Spartak’s game to this card. But I think that Karasev himself realized that he did it in vain.
