The thirteenth and penultimate stage of this season’s Diamond League ended in Brussels. The day of the competition turned out really great: Ingebrigtsen set a world record and Duplantis and Jackson had a good chance of achieving it. Even after the World Cup, the athletes are hot!
“I didn’t know how I would feel.”
Perhaps the main character of the evening was Jacob Ingebrigtsen. Despite his not-so-successful performance at the 2023 World Cup, fans expected the Norwegian to break another world record, this time in the 2000m. This distance is run very rarely, but the list of the best in it is filled entirely with star names.
Jacob did everything right. In each lap, the athlete surpassed the results of the world record holder El Guerrouj. In the end, Ingebrigtsen finished in 4:43.13, 1.66 seconds faster than Guerrouge in 1999. Interestingly, the previous world record was already two years older than Jacob himself!

The world record holder did not allow his father to attend the 2023 World Cup. And he gave his son a tough opponent.
“It’s always fun to break a record. Ten days ago I contracted some kind of virus and I really didn’t know how I would feel today. But I felt very good and ended up having a good race. The “hares” helped me a lot, although they could have helped me more,” said Ingebrigtsen.
Kenya’s Rinold Kipkorir Cheruiyot finished second in the race (4:48.14), setting a junior world record and a national record. Rounding out the top 3 was Australian Stuart McSwain (4:48.77), who set the region record. And in general, the entire two-kilometer race turned out tremendously cool. The boys in the top 9 set three more national records and one regional record.

One step away from the world record
In addition to Ingebrigtsen, two more athletes tried to break records. The first was Sherika Jackson. She won the 200 meters in 21.48 seconds. This is the third best time in history. Sherika was just 0.14 seconds off the world record. However, Jackson broke the Diamond League record. Antonique Strachan of the Bahamas took second place in the race (22.31) and third place went to American Jenna Prandini (22.47).
The second to update the world record was Armand Duplantis. Already at a height of 6.10 m, the Swede was left in splendid isolation. Having achieved the victory, the athlete tried to clear 6.23 m, on the last attempt it even seemed that Duplantis was going to fly, but the crossbar still slipped. Despite this, Arman updated the competition record. The silver and bronze medalists were the American Sam Kendricks and the Filipino Ernest John Obiena (both 5.92).

Yaroslava Maguchikh also spoke about the desire to compete for a new world record before the stage in Belgium. However, the Ukrainian did not succeed. The newly crowned world champion won with a mark of 2.00m, Serbian Angelina Topic (1.97) took second place, updating the national record. Australian Eleanor Patterson (1.94) closed the top three.
The javelin throw was also in fashion. Haruka Kitaguchi updated the world’s best result of the season: 67.38, and also broke the national record. Among the first three were the Australian Victoria Hudson (64.65) and the Latvian Lina Muse-Sirma (63.00).
Paralympic Champion – in prizes!
Interesting things also happened in competitions that were not held under the auspices of the Diamond League. Among the participants in the women’s long jump was Paralympic champion Fleur Yonge. In her youth, the athlete suffered a bacterial infection of her blood, so the girl had to amputate her legs below the knee and the last phalanges of eight fingers.
In Brussels, Yong competed on equal terms with regular athletes and took second place. Fleur jumped 6.74 meters, bettering his record by 26 cm! The winner of the competition was Ivana Vuleta (6.74).

And in the men’s 10,000m, Daniel Ebenyo won by almost 30 seconds! The Kenyan ran in 26:57.80 and silver medalist Jimmy Gressier in 27:25.48. Kenyan Stanley Mburu won bronze in 27:30.36.
But this race was not remembered for the results of the leaders. Eritrean runner Aron Kifle stopped at the finish line without finishing the race. The judge approached him and spoke with him for a long time. Apparently she tried to persuade him to run the last lap. After unsuccessful negotiations, she returned to the other referees and, after a pause, Kifle continued his run to applause from the stands. He finished last, eighth with a time of 30:23.33.
The Diamond League final will be held in Eugene (USA) on September 16 and 17.
