So far, 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva can relentlessly be called the most important discovery of the 2023 season. The young Russian talent has already broken into the top 70 of the WTA ranking, and at the Lausanne tournament, which began on Monday, July 24, she appeared for the first time as the seeded tennis player in the main draw of the WTA-250 category tournament. On the eve of the competition in Switzerland, domestic fans had a reasonable question: what will the debut of the Krasnoyarsk star look like and whether she will be able to cope with the first rival.
Representatives of the weaker sex traditionally fight for the main trophy of the tournament in Lausanne in mid-July. The Swiss Women’s Championship has been held since 1899. In the Open Era, the tournament was based in Lugano, Gstaad, Geneva, Lucerne, and since 2019 it has been based in Lausanne. There were no Russians among the champions and finalists yet. This year, among the participants are Elina Avanesyan, Mirra and Erika Andreeva, as well as Evgenia Rodina (SR).

The tournament in Switzerland in 2023 began for Andreeva Jr., seeded under the sixth number, with little adventures. It should be said that Mirra Andreeva made her professional debut in 2022, when she was 15 years old. In 2023, Andreeva, a junior Australian Open finalist, began competing in adult competitions on a regular basis. First, the young Russian shone in the “thousand” of Madrid, reaching the fourth round. Then the tennis player reached the 1/16 final at Roland Garros, having previously gone through three qualifying rounds. And in the following TBSH, Mirra managed to improve her record in the majors. Dayana Yastremskaya, who eventually became Mirra’s opponent in the first round, is frankly unsuccessful this season. The Ukrainian, known for her high-profile political statements and her ugly doping history, was once ranked among the top 20 tennis players on the planet. But this year, she only reached the semifinals at the WTA-125 clay court tournament in Reus, and the 23-year-old Odessa native hasn’t made it past the second round at other tournaments this year. It is not surprising that in the debut confrontation between these two representatives of the women’s round, it was the Russian who was already considered the favorite.
Mirra confirmed her status already in the first set, taking her service on the move and breaking. Andreeva Jr. then pushed the lead to three games. But the Russian woman was not going to stop there either. The young athlete at the third attempt took another foreign service and took the lead in the first set – 4:0. The Ukrainian was literally unsuccessful, while her opponent literally flew across the court. It is not for nothing that the opening set, which lasted only 29 minutes, ended with a “shuffle”. 6:0 – Mirra left the game with such a score.

The subsequent course of events has not changed. The Russian woman continued to press her opponent, giving her no chance. Taking two games in motion and at the beginning of the second game, Mirra relaxed a bit, allowing Dayana to take a break and at the same time the first game of the match: 2: 1. Leapfrogs followed, but it was Andreeva who was able to stop her, managing to escape for three games in the middle of the set and reaching a comfortable end of the match in her favor: 5:2. The talented Russian woman managed to successfully win the duel – she closed the meeting from the first match point. 6:0, 6:2 in 1 hour 6 minutes-Mirra won her first meeting, being the top seed in a professional tournament.
By reaching the 1/4 final in Lausanne, the Russian will now fight on Wednesday or Thursday with the Hungarian Anna Bondar.
