Villarreal staged an epic comeback, but was left out of the fight for European competition.
Real Madrid has already won the Spanish championship. The main task at the end of the season is to prepare for the Champions League final. And also provide practice to those players who did not receive it during the championship. The match against Villarreal was an ideal opportunity for the Madrid reserve team to show itself.
In the first half, Real destroyed the rival. It is surprising, because Villarreal still had a chance to qualify for the European Cup. And in such an important match, the team suddenly collapsed. Arda Guler, who had been suffering from injuries all season, opened the scoring in the 14th minute. But in the last five days Arda has taken the field regularly and surprised Carlo Ancelotti. Madrid continued to control the development of the match. But in the 39th minute, Dani Ceballos showed why he is a subsidiary. He lost the ball under pressure, Villarreal attacked quickly and Alexander Sørloth scored with a header. But in the next attack, Real scored again! The guests made a beautiful combination: Luka Modric and Brahim Díaz played on the wall, the second sent a through pass into the area, Lucas Vázquez received the ball and immediately beat Villarreal goalkeeper Jorgensen. Madrid aesthetics! And Güler, who scored a double, finished off the home team: in the 45th minute + 2 he received a pass from Vázquez and shot into the second corner of the goal. 4:1 – the match is over. Or not?

During the break, Alexander Sørloth probably learned that Erling Haaland had become English champion with Manchester City. Inspired by the success of his compatriot, the Villarreal forward went out to crush Real. Sørloth scored three (!!!) goals in eight minutes. Curiously, Gerard Moreno assisted him on three occasions. This is the new combination of European football. In the 48th minute, Sørloth beat Eder Militao and Antonio Rüdiger in the area and headed the ball towards the Real Madrid goal. Alexander scored the next two goals, outwitting Militao. He first received a pass from Moreno, took out the Brazilian on a break and shot low into Andrei Lunin’s goal. And then Gerard and Alexander played on the wall: the Norwegian accurately shot from under Eder into the far corner. 4:4 – madness! And all this happened from minute 48 to minute 56.

But then the game calmed down. “Real” had nowhere to rush, and after such a fall, where to rush? And “Villarreal” seemed to be afraid of his own coldness. Although Sørlot was able to score a penta-trick, repeating the achievement of Zenit’s Mateo Cassierra. But Alexander fell short after a brilliant pass from Gonçalo Guedes from the right wing. The match ended in a productive draw. Villarreal lost its chances of competing in Europe, but achieved one of the most epic comebacks in its history. And the Real Madrid players learned a great lesson before the Champions League final: you can’t relax even if you have a three-goal lead.
