The name of Sergei Chuev, a master of sports in Greco-Roman wrestling, became known to a wide Russian audience only after a high-profile incident in the capital. The wrestler was not afraid to defend a pregnant woman in front of a drunken crowd, for which he ultimately paid with her life.

The event occurred in June 2019. One night, Chuev was walking in the Yuzhny Butovo park with his girlfriend. At this time, he noticed how the crowd was bothering the girl. The fighter did not pass by, at first trying to settle the issue peacefully. “What are you doing?” he yelled at him. This was followed by an aggressive response – a skirmish began.
Sergey’s strength and training were not enough to cope with three drunk people. They knocked him down and started beating him. At that moment, he fell into a pond from which he was not allowed to get out. The athlete choked and the criminals rushed to escape the scene as soon as possible. Subsequently, passers-by pulled him out of the water and called an ambulance, but the doctors were unable to bring the fighter back to life.
– I was always afraid of this, because it will never happen. What she feared, then it happened … she did not have time to marry, she always helped everyone,-Chuev’s father recalled.
THE INEVITABLE RECOVERY
The criminals were quickly identified by surveillance cameras. They were discovered the next day in a local shopping center: the instigators did not even resist. Six citizens of Tajikistan were under charges. They were charged with murder.

Some time later, they tried to curtail the criminal case: the investigation did not have sufficient evidence. However, the wide public resonance of the story forced authorities to revisit the issue and eventually send the perpetrators to jail.
Four men were charged with beatings and two others with intentionally inflicting grievous bodily injury resulting in death. In court, the criminals denied their guilt to the end and shifted the blame between themselves. At some point, trying to justify themselves by the facts, the defendants even claimed that the culprit in the conflict was … Sergei’s girlfriend, who hit one of the Tajiks with her shoulder. None of the offenders managed to escape punishment – they received a sentence of 4 to 7.5 years in a penal colony.
