The UFC 291 tournament ended in Salt Lake City (USA). On the main card of the tournament, the audience saw a powerful return to the Octagon of former contender for the heavyweight title of the organization, Derrick Lewis, who was opposed the Brazilian Marcos. Roger de Lima.
The black beast is one of the brightest representatives of the heavyweight division of the UFC. The textured American debuted in the world’s strongest league in 2014 and is considered a veteran of the organization. Lewis doesn’t really seem like a man who, by all means, wants to get a championship belt. He has repeatedly pointed out that he fights for money and he does it with great pleasure.
Apart from hitting knockouts, Lewis is also famous for his sense of humor. His statements at press conferences and after the fights are scattered in quotes, and some actions remain in the memory of the fans for a long time. After one of the fights, for example, Lewis simply took off his shorts and stayed in his shorts. To a silent question from Joe Rogan, who was in the Octagon, Derrick replied that he was too hot. Lewis did the same trick after today’s fight, again staying in his shorts.
Lewis came close to dueling Cyril Gan for the interim champion belt in 2021 in a four-win series, but after losing to the Frenchman, the Black Beast began a losing streak. He defeated Chris Dakas, followed by three early losses against Tai Tuivasa, Sergey Pavlovich and Sergey Spivak. Many attributed it to age, since Lewis is already 38 years old, and they said that Derrick would not return to his previous level.

But after today’s win over De Lima, Lewis’s malicious criticism has subsided. The lean Derrick approached the fight in excellent shape and gave a real performance. In the opening seconds, in Jorge Masvidal style, he kneed an opponent and then unleashed a barrage of finishing blows, literally destroying the Brazilian in 32 seconds. And then he performed the legendary celebration of him, wowing the audience.
Derrick set two records at once. First of all, this is the fastest win of his career. And secondly, Lewis rewrote his own record for the number of knockout victories in the UFC: now the American has 14 of them, and this is the organization’s best number in history.
After the fight, Lewis stated that his contract with the UFC had expired and that he would now be in talks about his future. There is no doubt that Dana White will offer Derrick a new deal after such a spectacular fight. And there’s also no doubt that Lewis will still be able to make some noise in the league. If Tony Ferguson, for example, has been making noise lately only on social media, then Derrick has closed out his recent losses with force and has shown in practice that he is still capable of surprising.
