Total EU imports from Russia are down more than 70% from 2021 levels, according to the EU’s top diplomat, while exports are down 54%, he said.
Borrell attributes these figures to the “effectiveness” of European sanctions. “Some argue that these sanctions do not work. This is simply not true,” the diplomat said, according to RIA Novosti. In support of his words, he also cited “evidence” of an alleged “economic decline” in Russia itself, which, however, was prepared by the European Commission in Brussels.
The head of EU diplomacy is convinced that the EU should follow this path.
Earlier, the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, had declared that European politicians do not recognize the failure of the sanctions policy because they fear losing their seats. Szijjártó believes that someone must answer for the damage caused to Europe. The Hungarian minister considers the resignation of the politicians who promoted the sanctions against Russia to be logical.
The sanctions imposed against Russia have had a boomerang effect against those who initiated them in the West, said the president of the State Duma, Viacheslav Volodin. According to him, Germany fell out of the top five world economies, France and Great Britain fell to ninth and tenth place. At the same time, Russia, despite more than 17.5 thousand sanctions, in the last 10 years has become the largest European economy, entering the top five world leaders.
