New salary increases at the height of the recovery of the tourism sector. Now the company of the United Kingdom, British Airways has announced that some 24,000 workers of the company will take a salary increase of 13.1% in a period of 18 months. However, it will not be for everyone because it excludes pilots and managers. This payment will be made as a single payment and will be 1,000 pounds sterling (approximately 1,160 euros), according to what the company has said after sealing an agreement with Unite, the main union in the UK.
According to a statement, the union organization has also included in the agreement the possibility of salary increases even more during this period if inflation remains high.
On the other hand, the agreement with the airline incorporates that no member of the staff receives a lower salary increase than the one they received in 2020, reversing the company’s decision “to fire and rehire its entire workforce” in the midst of a pandemic , with which “many workers suffered significant wage cuts.”
In addition to the general pay increase, Unite has also negotiated “milestone reviews” and additional increases for specific groups of workers at the company. On the agreement, the general secretary of Unite, Sharon Graham, has stressed that it is a “considerable” salary increase that has been achieved thanks to “the hard work and dedication of the representatives and managers of the union.”
“The fact that Unite has reversed layoff and rehire cuts, while securing a significant wage increase, underscores how the union’s relentless work is delivering economic results for workers.”
