Correos hires almost 20,000 people to reinforce voting by mail

Date: July 27, 2024 Time: 06:10:37

Correos has foreseen the need to reinforce its service as a result of the elections on July 23 and the activities related to voting by mail, and has hired 19,400 new workers to provide support during the weeks prior to the elections. .

Despite the fact that recent hiring already far exceeds the requests of the unions, which requested an increase of at least 12,000 workers in the workforce, Correos has stated that it will continue to recruit staff in order to guarantee the correct development of remote voting.

The public company anticipated the need to have more workers due to the increase in requests for voting by mail, in addition to the advancement of the date of the general elections to the holiday period. For this last reason, the postal service company has decided to fully comply with the vacations of its workers during the month of July.

Extraordinary openings on Saturdays

In this sense, more than 30% of the employees who had planned their vacations this month have voluntarily requested to delay them to be available during the campaign, which indicates, in the company’s opinion, “the high level of commitment of the workforce Post Office with the public service”.

The company has also made extensions of hours in 274 offices, especially in areas where the greatest influx is expected, such as tourist areas, a measure that may be extended to more offices in the coming days, depending on the needs. Extraordinary openings are also contemplated on non-working days such as Saturdays and holidays.

In fact, last Saturday, July 8, 225 offices were opened in towns in Catalonia, Andalusia, the Valencian Community, Murcia and the Balearic Islands and it is expected that next Saturday, July 15, they will open extraordinarily, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 2,061 offices throughout Spain.

The opening will be exclusively to meet the needs of citizens related to the electoral process (delivery of notified electoral documentation and admission of voting by mail). These time extensions and extraordinary openings may be extended depending on how the postal voting process evolves in the coming days.

Reinforcements in delivery and logistics centers

Correos has also reinforced the distribution network with 250 additional PDAs for the delivery of electoral documentation. In addition, a large part of the contracts made are intended to reinforce the delivery staff, especially in tourist areas, for the delivery of electoral documentation.

Weekend deliveries are also planned. Specifically, next Saturday, July 15, there will be an extraordinary distribution throughout the country.

This extraordinary distribution completes the one carried out last Saturday, July 8, in 586 distribution units throughout Spain, in which 3,033 Correos employees worked delivering electoral documentation.

The transport routes for the remittance of the documentation from the logistics center to all the distribution units will also be adapted, depending on the needs.

Similarly, the service will be reinforced in all logistics centers, including the one located at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport, for the management of international shipments.
