The largest plant in Europe. That is the promise that Fertiberia has made after signing an agreement with Horisont Energi to jointly develop the ‘Barents Blue’ project, a clean ammonia production plant that will be the largest in Europe. It will be located in Norway and the national company has communicated this Thursday to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).
Both companies signed a cooperation agreement in February of this year for the start-up of this plant and have now signed a new one, based on the previous one, which will allow Fertiberia to have a 50% stake in the ‘Barents Blue’ project.
As reported by Fertiberia last February, the project has a grant of 482 million Norwegian crowns (41.74 million euros at the current exchange rate) within the framework of the EU IPCEI hydrogen program that will not be affected by the changes in the consortium of partners.
The concept of the ‘Barents Blue’ project consists of using natural gas from a field located in the Barents Sea to produce ammonia. During the production process, virtually all of the carbon will be captured and permanently stored in the Polaris geological CO2 storage.
Once operational, the facility will have a production capacity of 3,000 tons of ammonia per day and will be the “most energy efficient plant in the world.”
