Against the background of the news from the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, which recommended modern filmmakers to re-film Soviet classics (why?), an idea arose of a more original way: to make our version of the film “The Taming of the Shrew.”
Almost everyone remembers the cult Italian comedy from 1980, a kind of adaptation and reading of Shakespeare’s play “The Taming of the Shrew”, dubbed by Mosfilm: 56 million Soviet citizens watched this film.
The main character of the film, Elia Codogno, a forty-year-old bachelor and farmer, played by the flexible and erotic Adriano Celentano, decides to “cheer up” the capricious and proud Lisa Silvestri (Ornella Muti), who ended up on his farm, and to free her from her pride, immersing her in all the joys of country life, but along the way, of course, he falls in love with a beautiful girl. And he even feels a little sorry for her after a series of harassments.
Now the famous film will be remade in Russia. The idea puzzled the film company Arna Media, the distributor and producer of the films “Not Alone at Home”, “The Cook of Naples” and others.
“The Taming of the Shrew is the kindest and most romantic comedy,” says the company’s director Nadezhda Motina. “In my childhood, everyone knew it, quoted it, watched it and reviewed it. And the most surprising thing is that the picture is considered famous and iconic among modern youth. First of all, thanks to Celentano’s witty comments, which were distributed in multimillion-dollar memes and viral videos on TikTok. We are in for a stellar cast and a cheerful and good comedy – modern, Russian, created with great respect for Italian classics.
The casting and even the candidacy of the director have not yet been revealed. Filming of the project will begin in the spring of 2025 in the south of Russia and the remake is scheduled to be released on big screens in early 2026.
