In the UK today, a court convicted Lucy Letby, 33, who worked as a nurse in Chester. She is sentenced to life in prison without the right to pardon and petition for parole. In the British legal system, this is the most severe punishment possible. Letby became the fourth woman from the kingdom to be sentenced to life imprisonment.
At Chester Hospital, seven newborns died one after the other in 2015-2016; some more, who were born perfectly healthy, suddenly began to experience severe and painful symptoms.
All this happened in those days when Nurse Letby was on duty in the neonatal department, in which babies were kept. And some of her doctors immediately suspected her of what was happening, but the hospital management did not conduct investigations, indeed, they demanded that the complainants be silent. At the same time, they were forced to apologize to the killer in writing, and it was decided not to report anything to higher authorities, so the sudden and unusually high infant mortality in the institution simply could not attract anyone’s attention.
But in the end, the head doctor still had to contact the police. Investigators found that during the shift, the nurse intentionally killed the children: she injected air or insulin into their veins with a syringe, she used a gastric tube through which she pumped air into their stomachs.

Seven babies were officially confirmed dead, six more survived after Letby’s monstrous manipulations. In total, the names of sixteen victims were heard in the courtroom. It was also reported at the trial that in the former workplace of a nurse, in one of the hospitals in Liverpool, two newborns also died for no apparent reason, but it was not possible to prove the involvement of the defendants in these cases in the time of sentencing. But British law enforcement officials confirmed they would carry out a separate investigation in Liverpool. More than fifty detectives have already been involved in the work, studying thousands of medical records.
The court-appointed psychiatric examination found Letby sane. The experts could not give any explanation of the monstrous acts of him.
The judge defined Letby’s crimes as “a cruel, calculated and cynical campaign to kill children”.
– You had a deep anger, bordering on sadism. You will spend the rest of your life in prison. he said, reading the verdict.
Letby’s lawyers insisted on their client’s innocence. She herself said that the babies died of natural causes, and she blamed everything on the management of the medical institution, in which, according to her, there was not enough staff, and the newborns were not provided with adequate care.
The killer couldn’t explain another shocking discovery made at his home. It turned out that there was a cache in it, in which there were, as she herself called, memorabilia: records of resuscitation equipment, postcards from the parents of the victims, children’s blood tests. It also turned out that Letby was constantly following the families of the babies she killed on the Internet. According to her, she did it out of sheer curiosity and got no pleasure from it.
